• John Leguizamo criticized former President Trump for ending federal DEI programs, calling it a move to create a “White-only club.”
  • Trump’s policies, including the removal of a page honoring Jackie Robinson, sparked concerns about erasing minority contributions to history.
  • Leguizamo highlighted DEI’s role in addressing systemic inequality and emphasized the challenges faced by Black and Latino communities.

Actor and activist John Leguizamo stirred controversy during his recent appearance on The View, accusing former President Donald Trump of dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in federal institutions. According to Leguizamo, these actions are an attempt to transform the government into what he described as a “White-only club.”

Trump Ends Federal DEI Programs

As part of his political agenda, Trump initiated an executive order that terminated all DEI mandates and policies in federal agencies. This move, as discussed during the interview, left many questioning its implications for minority groups. Leguizamo argued that DEI initiatives were originally designed to address systemic inequality stemming from centuries of racial oppression, including segregation and redlining. These programs served as tools to help Black and Latino communities achieve equity after generations of exclusion.

He stated, “DEI was supposed to give equity to Black and Latinos because we’ve been here for 500 years… This was to undo 500 years of oppression and give us a chance to level the playing field.”

Scrubbing History: Is Progress Being Erased?

One notable example of Trump’s policies, according to Leguizamo, was the temporary removal of a Defense Department webpage honoring Jackie Robinson’s military service. This led to widespread concern about erasing landmarks of minority contributions to history. Leguizamo called this act symbolic of a larger effort to devalue diversity efforts, describing it as a direct attack on minority representation.

Beyond DEI, Trump’s immigration policy came under fire. Leguizamo criticized the former president’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to justify mass deportations of alleged gang members. While Trump’s plan has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge, the actor expressed worry about the lack of due process for those detained, arguing many may not even have gang affiliations.

“Equity Feels Like Oppression” to Some

Co-host Sunny Hostin weighed in, calling out individuals who oppose DEI programs because they mistakenly believe equity threatens their status. “Equity feels like oppression to people who have not experienced oppression,” she remarked.

Leguizamo agreed but clarified, “It’s not all White people. But some White people feel like Latinos and Black people are being given an unfair advantage. The truth is, we have to work five times harder than our White peers to get into positions of power.”

The Cultural Divide Over DEI

The debate over DEI reflects broader cultural tensions in America. While some see these programs as essential for addressing historical injustices, others view them as unnecessary or divisive. Leguizamo passionately advocated for keeping DEI initiatives intact, emphasizing that diversity is a strength embraced by many Americans.
